Transactional Analysis for Coaches
Understand the patterns beneath the conversation.
Why do clients sometimes know what they want to change, but find themselves repeating the same behaviours, relationships or patterns?
Transactional Analysis (TA) gives coaches another way to understand what's happening beneath the surface.
By exploring the beliefs, patterns and internal dynamics that influence how people behave in the present, you can help clients recognise what may be holding them back and find different ways forward.
Designed for practising coaches, this course takes familiar TA concepts – including the Drama Triangle and the Adult, Parent and Child ego states – and explores how to apply them thoughtfully and ethically within your coaching practice.
Go beyond the presenting challenge.
Our early experiences can shape the beliefs and patterns we carry into adult life, often without us being conscious of them. You'll explore how those patterns can show up in coaching, from recurring dilemmas and relationship dynamics to the internal voices that influence how a client sees themselves and responds to the world around them.
The aim isn't to diagnose or analyse your clients but to give you another lens through which to understand what you're seeing and hearing, so you can work with greater depth and curiosity.
Bringing TA into the coaching room.
Across four sessions, you'll explore some of the key principles and models of Transactional Analysis and, importantly, how to use them in coaching rather than therapy.
You'll look at how early scripts can influence present-day behaviour; how injunctions, rackets and strengths can help you make sense of recurring patterns; how different ego states can create internal conflict or impasse; and how psychological games and the Drama Triangle can help you understand recurring dynamics between people.
Throughout, the emphasis is on application – taking the theory into the coaching room, practising what you learn and reflecting on how it can support your work with clients.
Working with depth and care.
Working at greater psychological depth also means knowing the boundaries of your role. Ethics and professional practice run throughout the course, helping you understand how to use TA appropriately within coaching and recognise where the boundaries between coaching and therapy sit. You'll leave with practical models and ways of thinking that can help you recognise what's happening beneath a client's presenting challenge, explore it safely and support meaningful change.
